His wife is a family attorney. He said her car was broken into outside the court in 2006. A $1,500 laptop was stolen that resulted in $5,000 in charges to a credit card number in the computer. Wilson and others want basic protections such as a visitors parking lot with a security guard. A guard protects an employee lot behind the court. Wilson said his group has tried to contact the Wayne County Sheriff's Office for help, but didn't hear back. Sheriff's officials said Tuesday the break-ins are in the Detroit Police's jurisdiction since they occur on city streets, not court property that sheriff's officers protect. Detroit Police spokesman James Tate said the city is cracking down. "It's one of those things where you have to catch the suspects in the act or have good enough information to make an arrest," said Tate. "It's our responsibility to patrol the streets and we are facing this head on." You can reach Delores Flynn at (248) 647-7225 or dflynn@detnews.com |
