private parking lot complete with an armed security guard. The poor, unsuspecting Citizens who go to that court, fighting to keep the State of Michigan from stealing their children, only to come out of the court to find their cars vandalized and robbed. Meanwhile Wayne County THIRTEEN Commissioners get DOUBLE the salary and perks of their counterparts in surrounding communitities. Maybe if we FIRED a dozen fat-assed commissars we could get more real SERVICE out of our government. SEE THE ORIGINAL STORY ... a year ago !!!

Security outside court slammed
Family support group calls for added protection
Delores Flynn / The Detroit News DETROIT -- Going to the Lincoln Hall of Justice last month to discuss visitation for her granddaughter was rough enough for Reta Coleman, but things got worse when she left the family court to find the rear passenger window of her car smashed and five nearby cars burglarized. |

"They stole my purse with $140, a work badge and ran up $500 on my credit card. Now I don't have money to fix the car," she said. "It really makes me angry. This is a place of business. There needs to be better security out here. The city should protect the citizens of Detroit." Coleman and five others from the Parents for Children rallied outside the facility for two hours Tuesday to protest what they claim is a lack of protection near the court on East Forest near Russell. The 10-year-old Dearborn organization has supporters across the state who work to address problems in family court. Officials estimate there are two car break-ins daily near Lincoln Hall, but police reports aren't always filed. "Hundreds of families come here on a regular basis trying to get their kids back only to come out of court to face the additional burden of broken into cars. I understand cities have tight budgets, but something needs to be done," said Dan Wilson, director of Parents for Children. |

His wife is a family attorney. He said her car was broken into outside the court in 2006. A $1,500 laptop was stolen that resulted in $5,000 in charges to a credit card number in the computer. Wilson and others want basic protections such as a visitors parking lot with a security guard. A guard protects an employee lot behind the court. Wilson said his group has tried to contact the Wayne County Sheriff's Office for help, but didn't hear back. Sheriff's officials said Tuesday the break-ins are in the Detroit Police's jurisdiction since they occur on city streets, not court property that sheriff's officers protect. Detroit Police spokesman James Tate said the city is cracking down. "It's one of those things where you have to catch the suspects in the act or have good enough information to make an arrest," said Tate. "It's our responsibility to patrol the streets and we are facing this head on." You can reach Delores Flynn at (248) 647-7225 or dflynn@detnews.com |
